THE National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is addressing the rising volumes of software vulnerabilities, exacerbated by AI-driven research and scanning. An RFI has been issued to seek public feedback on integrating AI into the management of the National Vulnerability Database (NVD), specifically focusing on vulnerability management processes and risk prioritization.
As of August 2026, over 50,000 vulnerabilities have been reported, marking a 72% increase from 2025, but most are deemed non-exploitable. Experts suggest that while AI can aid in improving vulnerability assessment, maintaining human oversight is essential to ensure data accuracy and trustworthiness.
