CERN plans to migrate over 2,200 industrial computers and devices used in its accelerator control system to Debian 13, due to Red Hat raising processor requirements that render half of its current hardware incompatible. The switch is aimed at avoiding costly hardware upgrades, which could exceed CHF 5.4 million. While the migration will enable existing machines to operate without replacement, other environments such as data centers will continue using the Red Hat ecosystem due to necessary toolchain requirements. Engineers are addressing workflow adjustments needed for the Debian transition.
