HACKERS are utilizing the Steam Workshop to spread malware through malicious Steam wallpapers, primarily targeting gamers in China and Russia. This campaign leverages the Wallpaper Engine app, allowing users to create and share animated backgrounds that can conceal malware. Once a compromised wallpaper is applied, it can deploy malware like DarkKomet, steal credentials, and install crypto miners. The payloads are varied, indicating multiple hacking groups are involved.
Users are advised to be cautious when downloading wallpapers and should employ multi-factor authentication to protect their accounts. Keeping antivirus software updated is recommended to fend off known threats.
