YOUTUBE is changing how it calculates video view counts starting August 24, 2025. Views will now be counted as soon as a user initiates playback and the first frame renders, eliminating the need for a minimum watch duration. This aligns the view count methodology across different formats like Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams, previously criticized for inconsistency. While this change may inflate public view counts, ad revenue metrics remain unchanged.
Creators are warned that true audience engagement can still be assessed through advanced YouTube Analytics, focusing on ‘Engaged Views’ instead of inflated general metrics. This unification may complicate brand relations, as advertisers will seek more reliable data on engagement rather than superficial view counts.
