MARCUS Hutchins, born in Ascot, England, gained fame as a cybersecurity expert after discovering a 'kill switch' for the WannaCry ransomware in 2017 while working as a cyber threat analyst in Los Angeles. Despite his heroic act, he was arrested by the FBI three months later due to his past involvement in cybercrime. Hutchins describes his journey from complex hacker ethics to legitimate cybersecurity work, shaped by neurodiversity and a desire to understand systems deeply.
Initially, he developed malware tools for cybercriminals but later recognized the harm they caused, leading him to distance himself from that world. After a two-year court battle and a guilty plea for prior hacking activities, he was sentenced to probation.
