GOOGLE is preparing an “Unlock with Google Account” feature for Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5, according to code identified in the beta and an Android Authority teardown. If enabled, users who forget their phone’s PIN or password could regain access through a Google account already linked to the device, without first performing a factory reset.
The current recovery process normally requires wiping the device and then signing in with the previously used Google account to satisfy Factory Reset Protection, which is designed to prevent stolen phones from being reset and reused.
The feature is not enabled in the beta and appears likely to be optional rather than switched on by default. Avoiding a reset could protect contacts, photos and app data that have not been backed up, but using account credentials to bypass the screen lock could create a security risk if an attacker gained both the phone and access to its Google account.
The article says the final protection will depend on whether Google adds safeguards such as two-factor authentication, device-trust checks or account-recovery information. Security-conscious users may therefore prefer to leave the option disabled when it becomes available.
