WHATSAPP is launching a new username feature that allows users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers. This update caters to users who may be hesitant to share their phone numbers in various scenarios, such as group chats or when meeting strangers. Once implemented, users will have the option to reserve usernames without having their phone numbers visible to new contacts. The feature will not include a public directory, meaning only those with the exact username can initiate contact.
An additional optional feature, the 'username key', provides an extra layer of security. This rollout comes as WhatsApp anticipates significant username overlaps due to its large user base.
