GITHUB has stopped accepting new account registrations using Outlook or Hotmail email addresses. Applicants using either domain reportedly receive an error saying that their email address cannot be verified. Existing GitHub accounts registered with Outlook or Hotmail are not affected and can continue to be used.
GitHub said it took the measure after detecting persistent, organised fraudulent and abusive activity associated with the two email services. The report links the decision to groups mass-generating accounts, although it provides no figures or technical details about how the abuse was carried out. GitHub has not given a timetable for restoring registration with the affected domains and is advising new users to register with another supported email provider. The company said it will continue reviewing the policy while balancing access for legitimate developers against efforts to prevent abuse.
