"Encrypt It Already" Campaign Pushes Big Tech to Prioritize E2E Encryption

THE Electronic Frontier Foundation has launched Encrypt It Already, a campaign urging major tech and communications companies to deliver end-to-end encryption (E2EE) by default across their services, amid growing privacy concerns linked to AI.

The initiative points to Bluesky finally launching E2EE for direct messages, Ring enabling E2EE on its cameras by default, and Google offering E2EE for Android backup data as examples of progress, while stressing the need for default activation rather than optional features, according to EFF blog post.

It notes that some promises have yet to be fulfilled, including Bluesky’s overall implementation and Meta’s earlier move to enable E2EE by default for one-on-one Facebook Messenger conversations, with broader support still in testing. The campaign emphasises that turning on E2EE by default reduces user burden and strengthens privacy, a stance echoed by Thorin Klosowski of the EFF.

Namrata Maheshwari of Access Now warns that AI‑assisted tools threaten privacy, reinforcing calls for encrypted communications across platforms. The effort, described by Arielle Waldman for Dark Reading, suggests that several targeted companies are likely to enable these features within the year, with supporters stating they are “pivotal” for protecting conversations and data.
