GMAIL has announced the availability of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for enterprise users on Android and iOS, enabling them to read and compose encrypted messages natively in the Gmail app. Building on last year’s rollout of Gmail E2EE for enterprise inboxes, the feature lets users send encrypted messages to any recipient, with delivery differing only if the recipient uses Gmail.
The capability relies on client-side encryption (CSE) within Google Workspace, with administration requiring enablement in the Admin Console. Users can add client-side encryption to messages by tapping the lock icon and selecting additional encryption, after which they can continue to compose messages and attach files as normal. The rollout is available immediately to Google Workspace customers on the Enterprise Plus plan with the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on.
According to Google, this combination aims to boost privacy while keeping the experience user-friendly across small businesses, enterprises and the public sector.
