OPENAI has unveiled a new “Meetings” plugin integrated into the ChatGPT macOS desktop app, currently in beta and initially accessible only to Pro and Business subscribers, with Enterprise users trialling via a restricted alpha programme. The feature is designed to capture and transcribe meeting audio directly from the operating system, eliminating the need for a visible AI notetaker bot.
After a meeting, the system autonomously generates notes with an executive summary and action items, and deposits them into the user’s ChatGPT Space workspace. The integration extends to calendar ecosystems (Google and Outlook) for scheduling reminders and automated recording protocols. A prominent caveat from OpenAI emphasises that because audio is captured from the OS level, users must verbally notify participants and obtain explicit consent to comply with regional privacy laws.
Technically, the plugin records audio at the OS kernel level, making the video conferencing app or service inconsequential to capture. In practice, users can even be present in person at their desk, with the tool synchronising the recording and transcription. This cloud-based approach leverages the GPT-4o model and tightly couples with ChatGPT’s broader ecosystem, offering immediate actionable follow-on capabilities—such as updating project timelines or drafting client emails—directly from the meeting notes.
By contrast, Google’s Foresight is highlighted as an edge-AI, offline solution with local models, while ChatGPT Meetings relies on cloud processing and a premium subscription, raising considerations about data transmission and privacy.
