Google Cloud London Outage Disrupts Revolut Payments Across Europe

A London outage affecting Google Cloud has disrupted Revolut’s banking services across Europe, with the company and Reuters noting a direct link between the Google Cloud disruption in Google’s europe-west2 data centre and Revolut’s service outage.

The incident began when multiple Google Cloud services in the London region experienced disruptions, according to Google’s status page, and the disruption appeared to extend beyond infrastructure dashboards to affect customers’ ability to use Revolut’s app and cards for payments and ATM withdrawals.

Revolut confirmed that multiple services were disrupted and emphasised that customer money and data remained safe, a statement mirrored in the company’s public posts. ING Germany also reported problems logging into online banking and its mobile app on the same morning, though Reuters did not explicitly connect these issues to the Google Cloud outage and ING has not provided a formal cause.

The London data centre, europe-west2, is a key facility supporting UK and European fintech services, and Revolut serves tens of millions of customers across Europe; a major cloud outage in that region has the potential to ripple across dependent services until resolution is achieved.

At the time of reporting, Google’s engineering team was investigating, and no immediate comment from Alphabet was available. The incident underscores how heavily European banks and fintechs rely on a small number of cloud providers, making outages in a single data centre potentially disruptive for payments and access to financial services until full service restoration is confirmed.
