LineageOS 24.0 adds browser-based flashing for Android 17 devices

LINEAGEOS 24.0 has been released, built on Android 17 and aligned with a synchronized set of security updates through October 2026, spanning the 18.1 to 24.0 branches. The project notes that the release represents a mature level of functionality and stability comparable to LineageOS 23.2, with a broad revamp of several system applications and refinements to the upgrade pipeline. The initial list of officially supported devices will expand over time as maintainers complete their preparations.

For the legacy branches 15.1, 16.0 and 17.1, critical security patches have been backported up to November 2025, though Google no longer provides comprehensive, verifiable bulletins for those older Android versions, so displayed security patch dates will not be synchronized for those branches.

A notable addition in this release is a web-based flashing tool named “Lineage Flash Tools.” This WebUSB-based utility allows devices to be flashed directly from compatible web browsers, reducing the need to install standalone ADB and Fastboot utilities. The tool provides four modes: ADB, Fastboot, Samsung Odin, and Amlogic Burn, each tailored to different hardware and flashing protocols.

The LineageOS team emphasises that this browser-based approach is supplementary to existing installation methods, and users should consult official device documentation for precise guidance. Compatibility considerations include using a supported browser (such as Google Chrome) and potential driver or udev rule requirements on Windows and Linux, respectively.
