CLOUDFLARE has introduced Forge, an open-source pipeline for generating software development kits (SDKs), command-line interfaces (CLIs), documentation and libraries from API definitions. The company says the system was created to support its API, which spans more than 3,500 operations and hundreds of services written in Rust, Go, TypeScript and Python. Forge is already generating output for Cloudflare’s cf CLI, with plans to use it for the company’s API documentation and SDKs.
Forge is designed to run in continuous integration (CI) for each API repository. It lints changes and creates preview builds of affected CLIs, SDKs and documentation for every pull request, allowing teams to identify problems before changes are merged or released. Its pluggable transformers can generate different outputs and chain them together: an OpenAPI definition can produce a TypeScript SDK, which can then be used to generate the cf CLI and Cap’n Web specifications.
Cloudflare says the approach could also support TanStack Query bindings, Zod or Valibot schemas and MCP servers, while future input formats could include AsyncAPI, GraphQL, Cap’n Proto and Protobuf.
The company is also working towards API versioning that can introduce major versions without breaking existing clients or SDKs. Forge is available on GitHub under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence, and can be run privately with custom modifications at no cost.
