DENISS Zolotarjovs, a Latvian national linked to the Karakurt ransomware group, was sentenced in the United States to 8.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to money laundering and fraud tied to ransomware. The DoJ press release notes that, rather than conducting technical intrusions, he acted as a negotiator and strategist, analysing stolen data, setting ransom demands, and communicating with victims, and he earned about 10% of ransom payments through cryptocurrency laundering.

Between 2021 and 2023 the group targeted more than 54 organisations, causing losses reported to exceed $56 million and affecting a range of victims including businesses, government entities and a pediatric healthcare provider. Zolotarjovs was arrested in Georgia in December 2023, extradited to the U.S. in 2014, and in August 2024 was charged with money laundering, wire fraud and extortion.

He is described as a key intermediary within a ransomware ecosystem linked to former Conti members, and the sentence marks the first US conviction of a Karakurt group member. According to DoJ, the case demonstrates the growing reach of international law enforcement against cyber extortion.
