FEDERAL prosecutors have charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi citizen who joined OpenAI in July 2025, with covertly placing a recording device in an OpenAI executive conference room in San Francisco. The incident came to light after OpenAI security personnel found an encrypted bug inserted into a television USB port and wrapped in toilet paper. Internal cameras subsequently showed Alfozan entering the room on multiple occasions without authorisation.

Investigators say a chatbot account linked to his spouse requested instructions on building continuous audio recorders and encrypting SD cards. On 5 October, cameras captured him inspecting the television where the device was found, and security officers later recovered a second recording tool in an unattended bag bearing his ID.

Prosecutors state there is high attribution confidence, with physical devices, video footage and account activity pointing directly to Alfozan. The case has been framed by federal authorities as a national security matter, with officials suggesting the recording device sought to capture sensitive discussions about OpenAI’s super intelligence technology, including proprietary research, product roadmaps and government partnerships. If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

The article also notes recommendations for preventing insider threats, emphasising strict physical controls around executive spaces, regular checks of conference room displays and USB ports, and auditing internal access logs for unusual calendar-related queries.
