KOOTENAI County has notified residents of a potential data breach following a ransomware attack detected on its computer network on March 30, 2026. The county took immediate measures to secure the network and engaged cybersecurity consultants to investigate the breach, notifying federal law enforcement as well.

The compromised personal information includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, driver's license details, medical information, health insurance IDs, and financial data. Some individuals were affected with biometric identifiers. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility, and there are no indications of an extortion demand or ransom payment.
