CODEX has announced a revamp of the ChatGPT Pro 20x tier, with the service reopening to new sign-ups from tomorrow and existing subscribers able to renew as before. The change also comes with a recalibration of how usage is counted on the plan: in API spending terms, the new allowance is now half of the previous total.
In practical terms, the revised 20x plan aims to deliver more work output despite the reduced quota. Codex has indicated there will be no five-hour usage limit attached to this tier, and it signposts more features that will consume no usage, though details of these extras have not been disclosed.
The decision, according to Codex’s engineering manager Tibo, is intended to avoid inflating apparent value on paper while steering users toward a model where real usage better reflects the subscription, potentially making on-demand API credits more appealing in the long run. Codex also suggests that API prices and subscription value will converge over time, with examples floated such as a $200 ChatGPT Pro 20x plan equalling $200 in API credit in the future.
Whether this shift will benefit or hinder users remains to be seen. The piece notes that, even with the reduced API allowance, users may still complete more work, thanks to the updated pricing structure and planned feature set.
