CLOUDFLARE has announced a closed beta for its Monetization Gateway, a system that lets domain owners charge AI agents for access to resources behind Cloudflare’s network on a per-use basis. The gateway uses HTTP 402 Payment Required responses to prompt payment inline with a resource request, removing the need for redirects to separate payment flows.
Sellers define which requests require payment, the pricing rules (including per-URL, headers or query parameters), and payment destinations, with payments settled on the Base blockchain using USDC. In practice, this enables “paywall for agents” for resources such as APIs, data feeds and tools, and is designed to scale with minimal human intervention. Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator is used for payment verification, settlement and related analytics.
Four production use cases are highlighted. Ceramic[.]ai uses Monetization Gateway’s fixed pricing to allow agents to pay for web searches without an API key, leveraging Ceramic[.]ai’s 40+ billion-page index and sub-100ms responses. Stocktwits demonstrates an agent-facing path for market signals, pricing individual requests such as sentiment and trend data to agents rather than via conventional data licenses.
API2PDF utilises the gateway to charge for per-request PDF generation, returning an HTTP 402 when no API key is present and then settling for actual consumption. Finally, Cloudflare’s AI Gateway enables inference-time payments by adding a Payment-Method: x402 header; pricing engines cooperate with the gateway so pricing is consistent across components. The beta is US-only for now, with plans to expand geographies, and interested parties are invited to apply via the Cloudflare Dashboard.
