Google Sets 2029 Deadline for Quantum-Safe Cryptography

GOOGLE says it plans to integrate post-quantum cryptography into its systems, products, and services by the end of 2029, signalling a concrete migration deadline for the post-quantum era. The announcement, published in a blog post authored by Heather Adkins and Sophie Schmieg, frames PQC as essential amid concerns that quantum computers could undermine current authentication and encryption methods.

Google notes that NIST published its first PQC standards in 2024, and that these standards are serving as a road map for industry adoption, including the company’s own reference points. In addition, Android 17 will incorporate PQC digital signature protection using the Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm, alongside previously announced PQC support in Google Chrome and Cloud.

Melina Scotto, a cybersecurity executive adviser, tells Dark Reading the 2029 deadline is manageable and promotes a proactive security posture, emphasising the importance of crypto agility and layered defenses to safeguard long-lived data.
