Snatch-and-Run Stopped: Android’s New AI Locks Stolen Phones Instantly

ON 28 January 2026, Daily CyberSecurity reported that Google is rolling out a multi-layered Android security refresh designed to deter theft and protect users from snatch‑and‑run attacks. The highlight is on-device AI features, with Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock enabled by default on new devices in a policy shift targeting high‑risk regions such as Brazil.

Theft Detection Lock uses the phone’s gyroscope and sensors to identify the motion of a thief grabbing a device, and if a theft is detected it quickly locks the screen to protect data, according to Android Security Team. The update also expands Identity Check to cover third‑party apps and, alongside a stronger Screen Lock Guessing protection, aims to prevent thieves from accessing banking apps or Google Password Manager even if they know the PIN. Additionally, the Remote Lock tool now includes an optional security question or challenge to ensure only the real device owner can initiate a lock.
