A U.S. court has sentenced Aleksei Olegovich Volkov, a Russian national, to 81 months in prison for aiding major ransomware campaigns and causing more than $9 million in damages. Arrested in Italy in 2024 and later extradited to the United States, he pleaded guilty in November 2025 to charges including identity theft, fraud and conspiracy after his case was consolidated in Indiana.
Authorities say Volkov acted as an initial access broker, breaking into corporate networks by exploiting vulnerabilities and selling that access to other cybercriminals, including ransomware groups, enabling further attacks. The court noted that Volkov provided network access that his co-conspirators used to deploy ransomware, encrypt data, disrupt operations, and demand cryptocurrency ransoms, sometimes in the tens of millions, with victims paying and others seeing data exposed.
The press release published by DoJ states that Volkov admitted hacking networks, stealing data, deploying ransomware, and sharing profits, and that he was ordered to pay restitution of over $9.1 million and forfeit equipment used in the attacks. According to the DoJ, the sentencing reflects the scale of the crimes and the losses incurred across U.S. companies and other organisations.
