When combined with Automated Content Recognition (ACR) data and advertising identifiers, this data could enable detailed profiles of what people watch and which devices they use. Researchers demonstrated that a compromised TV could capture audio through its microphone even when the set appeared to be off, and that audio could be stored locally and retrieved after the TV reconnects to the internet. The team also reported remote‑code‑execution vulnerabilities affecting LG devices; full details are being withheld during ongoing responsible disclosure.
The article emphasises that the privacy and security risk extend beyond a single brand, given that smart TVs sit at the junction of entertainment, advertising and home networks. It highlights that attackers could gain a foothold on a home or business network, access audio data, or probe other devices.
Practical responses suggested by the researchers include keeping firmware up to date with security patches, reviewing and tightening privacy controls (disabling ACR, viewing-information collection, personalised ads, voice features, etc.), and segmenting networks (using a separate IoT or guest network for TVs and other smart devices). They also advise disabling Universal Plug and Play unless necessary and avoiding exposing TV services directly to the internet.
