APPLE announced on 26 February 2026 that the iPhone and iPad have been approved by NATO to handle classified information and have been added to the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue (NIAPC). The devices are described as the first consumer devices to receive this level of approval, specifically the ‘NATO RESTRICTED’ level, enabling secure access to data via the native Mail, Calendar and Contacts apps without special software or settings.
The NIAPC is NATO’s official registry of vetted cybersecurity products used by alliance members and military entities to meet critical operational security demands, with entry rules including origin from NATO countries, approved certifications, and national authority sign-off; approval remains discretionary on a case-by-case basis.
According to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), testing led to the conclusion that the devices meet NATO’s security requirements, and BSI’s evaluation also confirmed compatibility with the indigo configuration noted in the NIAPC listing, though Apple says the regular configuration received NATO approval. Apple added that BSI conducted testing on earlier iOS and iPadOS versions, while the NIAPC listing mentions iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.
