QUALCOMM has unveiled a new wave of AI-native broadband technologies designed to push beyond traditional router functionality, with a strong emphasis on edge intelligence. At the centre of the company’s presentation is the Qualcomm AI Wi‑Fi 8 gateway, developed in collaboration with Google’s gFiber and Gemtek Technology. The gateway is built to support gFiber’s symmetrical 20 Gigabit broadband and is powered by the Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite platform, which includes a dedicated Hexagon NPU and a five‑core CPU.
The key takeaway is that the device can run AI inference locally on the gateway, transforming it from a simple packet-forwarding box into a sophisticated edge service platform that can reduce cloud reliance, lower latency, and enable personalised, responsive experiences.
Qualcomm’s broader Dragonwing family extends beyond consumer gateways, outlining a Smart Service Architecture and infrastructure solutions aimed at operators. Dragonwing SAM offers an open software architecture that unifies devices, services, security and cloud intelligence to give operators enhanced network visibility and faster deployment of smart services, while strengthening cybersecurity.
The company also introduced infrastructure platforms targeting emerging markets to address fibre deployment challenges through customised millimetre-wave tech and TDMA schedulers, delivering cost-effective expansion with near-fibre capacity and low latency.
In fixed wireless access, the Dragonwing FWA Gen 6 Elite platform combines a 5G AI processor, an advanced modem‑RF system, and tri‑band Wi‑Fi 8, incorporating agentic AI and satellite capability to offer flexible broadband in homes and remote locations lacking wired networks.
In short, Qualcomm is positioning operators to monetise edge AI, turning home gateways into edge servers and enabling new value‑added services such as ultra-low-latency security analytics, dynamic gaming prioritisation, and local IoT voice assistants. The shift marks a notable move from purely networking hardware to integrated, intelligent broadband infrastructure.
