SailPoint warns human-speed security cannot keep pace with AI agents

THE Hacker News report covers a SailPoint study on a growing security paradox as enterprises rush to deploy autonomous AI agents. The Horizons of Identity Security report argues that security architectures remain designed for human workloads, creating an “AI velocity paradox” where organisations chase AI-enabled speed while relying on human-speed controls.

The result is an architectural ceiling: governance practices built for people do not scale to thousands of autonomous agents acting across cloud estates and rapid, minute-by-minute transactions.

Key findings show a stark maturity gap between human and non-human identity security. Across organisations, 60% are still in Horizon 1 (“No Formal Program”) or Horizon 2 (“Manual, Tool‑Assisted”). By contrast, human identity security has shown progress: five years ago 45% were at Horizon 1, now that figure is about 23%. Non-human identity lags badly, with 54% of organisations at Horizon 1 for agent identity security today.

The report attributes this to the “Digitization Trap”—digitising human processes while applying the same review cadences to ephemeral machine identities—paired with a shift toward machine-speed trust, where policy enforcement must run continuously and automatically rather than via manual approvals.

The authors argue that balancing speed and security is not a strategy in itself; instead, organisations should extend proven governance disciplines to cover unmanaged non‑human identities and unify them into a single security fabric that can keep pace with AI. The piece frames this as a practical priority rather than a complete rebuild.
