PRESIDENT Donald Trump claimed on 29 September 2026 that he and a group of leading artificial intelligence company leaders had signed a voluntary accord aimed at “self-policing” AI development. The meeting at the White House was marketed as addressing public concerns about the technology, and Trump described the move as part of a broader push to balance innovation with safety.

The signatories reportedly included Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sundar Pichai of Google, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Greg Brockman of OpenAI, Jensen Huang of Nvidia, and Elon Musk, whose xAI unit is now part of SpaceX.

The accord, which Trump posted on Truth Social, foresees four voluntary steps for participating firms. These steps include implementing robust internal controls, contracting with an independent external auditor to assess the controls’ effectiveness, and establishing a committee within each company’s board of directors to review reports from both internal and external audits. The document also notes that, over time, codifying these steps into law or regulatory frameworks may be appropriate.

While some experts welcomed the potential for guided oversight, others cautioned against overreliance on self-policing, emphasising the need for robust liability and clearer regulatory safeguards to manage AI-related risks as models grow more capable.
