MADERA Community Hospital in California has announced a data breach affecting over 150,000 individuals, wherein personal, financial, and medical information was compromised. The breach occurred in May 2025, lasting two days, during which hackers accessed the hospital's network and likely exfiltrated files. The compromised information includes names, contact details, social security numbers, and health data, although not all affected individuals had every piece of data compromised.
The hospital engaged experts for a thorough investigation and notified impacted individuals in July 2026. Interestingly, the extortion group responsible for the attack withdrew their ransom demand, stating a desire not to harm patients. The hospital has improved security measures and reported the incident to law enforcement and the Department of Health and Human Services.
