Google Drive and Docs Add Native Markdown Editing and Previews

GOOGLE has announced native Markdown support across Google Drive and Google Docs, allowing users to preview, edit, and collaborate on Markdown (.md) files without first converting them to Google’s formats. The feature is rolling out gradually and is now available to all Google Workspace customers and personal Google accounts, with deployment expected to complete within about 15 days from 6 October 2026.

In Drive, MD files render with headers, links, and tables, and users can toggle between the original Markdown source and the formatted preview. The MD source remains stored in Drive, and, when edited, Google Docs preserves the file in its original MD format rather than converting it automatically.

The upgrade aims to simplify collaboration with Markdown content, including smoother interactions with AI agents that rely on Markdown for structure and data. However, Google notes that not every Markdown element is fully supported; some complex formatting may revert to plain text or lose stylistic nuances such as certain fonts, highlights, or alignment. Despite these limitations, users can restore the pristine original version via version history.

The rollout is described as a phased deployment, so some users may experience a brief period where editing within Docs remains unavailable while access is enabled for their account.
