A Ukrainian national, Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, pleaded guilty in a US court to charges related to the Conti ransomware group. Arrested in Ireland in 2023 and extradited to the US in 2025, he admitted to joining the group in September 2021 and developing malware for them. Lytvynenko possessed data from 12 victims, including eight in the US, and continued cybercrime activities after Conti's shutdown in May 2022.
He pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and faces up to 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for September 2026. The Conti group was responsible for attacks on over 1,000 organizations and received at least $150 million in ransom payments before its operation ended.
