ON July 2, 2026, kernel.org experienced a significant outage due to a configuration error during the addition of a new primary mirror by the Linux Foundation. This misconfiguration caused all hosted kernel files to become inaccessible, resulting in HTTP 404 and HTTP 403 errors. The disruption affected downstream mirror sites, which subsequently deleted their own copies of kernel packages. Although recovery efforts were underway at the time of reporting, complete access to the archive had not yet been restored.
