ACCORDING to FBI's Seattle Division, the FBI is asking gamers who unwittingly downloaded malware from the Steam platform to help with its investigation, issuing a notice in mid-March as it pursues the threat actor behind the campaign. The FBI believes the threat actor primarily targeted users between May 2024 and January 2026, with several games identified in the investigation including BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.
Victims are urged to fill out a short form, or have a household dependent do so, and responses are voluntary but may be useful in the federal investigation and to identify you as a potential victim. The notice also explains that the FBI is legally mandated to identify victims of federal crimes and that victims may be eligible for certain services, restitution, and rights under federal and/or state law, with identities kept confidential.
Steam is noted as a popular malware distribution channel for infostealers designed to steal personal information and digital money, and impersonation and phishing attempts against the Steam brand are highlighted.
