SOME macOS users are experiencing severe delays when opening Google Chrome extension pop-ups. Clicking an extension icon can leave its window frozen for several minutes before it loads or responds. Reported examples include 1Password and script-management tools that rely on their pop-up interfaces for routine tasks. The article says restarting Chrome may result in the first 1Password click taking a long time, while removing and reinstalling the extension, including some beta versions, has not resolved the issue.
The cause has not been confirmed. One theory is that Chrome is assigning extension-related processes too low a priority, delaying access to system resources, but Google is still investigating user reports. The Chromium development team said in issue 549552319 that it would treat the problem as high priority and is assessing whether to expand the rollout of related experimental features.
PiunikaWeb reported on 21 September 2026 that a fix was being tested, although Google had not announced either a confirmed cause or a temporary workaround at the time of publication. Users of Chrome for macOS therefore have no stated mitigation beyond waiting for a future browser update.
