STEVENS Point officials are investigating a possible cyberattack after several city computer servers went offline early on Wednesday, 23 September. The disruption affected municipal telephone and email services and left employees unable to access some city systems.
District 4 Councilwoman Andrea Olson said city IT staff told employees and council members in a 6:51am email that the incident was a cyberattack. A second message, sent at 4:19pm, again described it that way and instructed all city computer users to reset their passwords. However, Mayor Mike Wiza said on Thursday morning that the city had not confirmed whether the outage resulted from hacking or another cause. He said monitoring software had detected that some city servers were offline, but stressed that officials could not yet confirm a cyberattack.
