.web top-level domain (TLD) has been delegated to the global DNS root by ICANN after a decade of legal disputes, with registration expected to open in late 2026. Verisign, the largest domain registry operator, will manage .web, which should mitigate brand-abuse issues commonly seen in smaller registries, although it may have higher registration fees. The journey toward this delegation began in 2016 when NuDotCo won the operating rights for .web, having bid $135 million.
HOWEVER , disputes arose over allegations of proxy bidding, leading to protracted legal reviews. In June 2023, ICANN ruled that NuDotCo had not violated regulations, paving the way for final delegation. The registration process for .web will include a Sunrise period for brand owners, followed by general availability, during which premium domain names may be sold at high surcharges. Standard pricing for regular domains has yet to be disclosed.
