Maryland pharmacist indicted for hacking, stealing medical data

ACCORDING to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland, a Maryland man is facing a federal indictment over an unauthorized computer access scheme involving a Maryland medical system. Matthew Bathula, 41, of Clarksville, is charged with two counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer, and one count of aggravated identity theft, while he was a pharmacy clinical specialist for Company A, a medical system located in the District of Maryland.

The indictment alleges that between July 2016 and September 2024 Bathula intentionally accessed Company A computers without authorization and obtained information from protected computers, including usernames, passwords, cookies, images, videos and other data, and that he employed techniques such as keylogging, cookie managers, mailbox-rule creation and file masquerading to access victims’ accounts.

It is noted that he allegedly targeted people who were current or former employees or otherwise affiliated with Company A, gaining access to online services and even deleting incoming emails with the subject “Critical Security Alert” to hide compromises. U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes and FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul are quoted in announcing the indictment, with the authorities describing the actions as an invasion of privacy and noting that about 195 victims were notified.
