Your New Co-Pilot: Google Maps Replaces Assistant with Gemini AI for Conversational Driving
According to Google, the latest update to Google Maps replaces Google Assistant with Gemini AI for a more conversational driving experience. The Gemini integration lets users issue complex, colloquial commands and hold follow-up questions during navigation, such as asking for affordable restaurants along a route or whether a place has parking. During navigation, users can also perform quick tasks without leaving the Maps interface, for example adding events to calendars or reporting traffic conditions verbally.
In addition to conversational navigation, Google is rolling out features like Landmark Directions, Proactive Notifications, and an upcoming Gemini-powered Google Maps integration with Google Lens, with availability expanding to Android and iOS in coming weeks. The announcement was made on 6 November 2025, with the broader rollout planned for regions where Gemini services are available and a future release on the Android Auto platform.
