Microsoft to Pay Publishers for AI Content in New Pilot Program
According to Axios, Microsoft is negotiating with several U.S. publishers on a pilot programme to create a bilateral marketplace where AI firms would provide financial compensation in exchange for content rights, beginning with Microsoft Copilot as the first AI buyer. The initiative positions Copilot as the starting point toward a sustainable business model for AI and publishers, with Microsoft noting that publishers’ original material is essential for timely, accurate and meaningful answers.
At its partnership summit in Monaco, Microsoft revealed that the pilot will gradually expand to additional partners, and that Microsoft intends to co-develop tools, policies and pricing models tailored for PCM (publisher content monetisation). The company also said Copilot will enable publishers to sell their content directly to Microsoft, and is exploring ways to extend the programme to its other AI products, though no launch timeline was announced.
Microsoft has already signed paid agreements with certain publishers to access their material, helping it stand apart from some competitors in terms of licensing approach. The report adds that early stages may involve limited internal testing with select partners before a broader rollout to the publishing industry.
