Roblox introduces age checks to use communication features

Roblox has announced plans to expand age estimation to all users who access on-platform communication features by the end of this year. The company describes age estimation as analysing a selfie to estimate a user’s age and place them into age groups (under 13, 13+, and 18+) to tailor their Roblox experience, with under-13 placements removing certain personal data such as email and phone number.

The move is framed as a step to strengthen safety by limiting interactions between minors and adults who do not know each other off the platform. Roblox previously rolled out an AI system to help detect early signs of possible child endangerment, which led it to submit 1,200 reports of potential child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the first half of 2025.

The article notes ongoing legal scrutiny and controversy around age verification and privacy, but emphasises Roblox’s aim to keep the environment safer while allowing access to age-appropriate content and features.
