THE Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber nearly $1 billion for violating the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by using automated software to suspend driver accounts without human oversight. The fine amounts to 825 million euros ($964 million) and applies to violations occurring from 2018 to 2022. Uber disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal, asserting it has since implemented human review processes.
This marks the fourth fine imposed on Uber by the Dutch authority, which previously fined the company for transferring personal data of European drivers to the U.S. without adequate protection.
