Long-Standing Windows Hello Bug Finally Fixed After 11 Months

Shortly after Windows 11 version 24H2 shipped, users reported irregularities with the Windows Hello facial recognition feature, with errors in facial detection causing some applications to freeze. Microsoft’s investigation confirmed the issue could be triggered when using the Camera app, Windows Hello biometric login, or any other app accessing the integrated camera.

To minimise impact, Microsoft blocked devices with the problematic cameras from upgrading to 24H2, preventing lockouts or failures in app functionality caused by faulty facial recognition. Now, after more than 11 months, Microsoft has finally resolved the bug and removed the upgrade block, allowing previously restricted devices to install Windows 11 version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel; it can take up to 48 hours before the update is offered.

According to Windows Health Dashboard, eligible devices with no other safeguard holds should be able to install 24H2, with restarting potentially helping the update offer. Microsoft also states that Windows 11 version 25H2 is planned for October, and it will share the same underlying infrastructure as 24H2.
