The Patch After the Patch: Microsoft Issues Emergency Fix for Remote Desktop and Shutdown Bugs

Microsoft has issued emergency out-of-band (OOB) updates in January 2026 to address issues arising after the latest general patch for Windows 10 and Windows 11, including problems with Remote Desktop login authentication and remote devices failing to shut down while connected. The fixes target the Remote Desktop problem introduced by the January 2026 update (KB5074109) and a power-management defect that caused some devices with Secure Boot enabled to restart spontaneously during hibernation or shutdown attempts.

Because these patches are not automatically delivered to all users, affected organisations must manually download and install the OOB updates to restore normal functionality. The download list includes KB5077744 for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2, KB5077797 for Windows 11 23H2, KB5077796 for Windows 10 22H2 and 21H2, and KB5077795 for Windows 10 1809. This follows the pattern of patches that, while addressing existing defects, can introduce new anomalies during deployment.
