Steam Confirms Malware Found in BlockBlasters Game

Steam has officially confirmed that malware was found in the BlockBlasters game, following player reports and security scans flagging unusual activity in the game’s files. The incident began with reports on 23 September that Steam’s built-in virus scanner identified malicious code in the game installation files, after BlockBlasters launched earlier this month.

According to Steam, the malicious code was not part of the original game design but was introduced through a third‑party ad management plugin; the company temporarily removed BlockBlasters from the store and disabled the game for all users. Steam said it is working with the game’s developer to remove the malware and ensure a clean version returns to the store only after a thorough audit, while promising to tighten checks for ads and external libraries.

Players who installed or played BlockBlasters between 20 and 24 September are advised to uninstall, delete installation files, and run a full antivirus scan, then update security software and consider changing passwords and enabling two‑factor authentication on critical services.
