iPhone Air Flops: Apple to Slash Production by Over 80% After Weak Sales
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, sales of Apple's ultra-thin iPhone Air have collapsed, with suppliers expected to reduce production by over 80% between now and Q1 2026 and some long-lead components set to be discontinued by late 2025. Reports from Mizuho Securities Japan last week put the cut at about one million units due to weak sales, while Nikkei Asia noted demand was “virtually nonexistent,” prompting Apple to scale back manufacturing drastically.
The analysis suggests that although the iPhone 17 line meets most premium expectations, there remains limited market space for niche models like the iPhone Air, making discontinuation likely. The piece notes that Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge has also faced disappointing sales, with the company ending further development of future Edge variants. It highlights that Apple’s standard iPhone and Pro models have tended to perform well, while fourth-tier models have struggled to gain traction. Overall, the trend points to a strategic retreat from ultra-thin designs as demand remains tepid.
