OpenAI Blocks ChatGPT Accounts Linked to Chinese Hackers Developing Malware

OpenAI has blocked ChatGPT accounts linked to a group of Chinese hackers developing malware, in a move aimed at preventing abuse of its models. According to GBHackers’ report, this action comes after OpenAI identified a cell in China using ChatGPT to write and refine malware code, part of its ongoing effort to curb policy violations. Since February 2024, OpenAI’s threat reporting has tracked and dismantled more than 40 networks misusing its services, according to the company’s latest quarterly update.

The OpenAI threat intelligence team spotted unusual query patterns and repeated prompts about malicious payloads, and when accounts showed clear policy breaches they were banned and access was severed. The article notes that the broader purpose is to document case studies so threat groups bolt AI onto existing playbooks, trading novelty for speed, with insights shared with cybersecurity partners and law enforcement to aid wider defence efforts.
