The Great Expurgation: X Bans “InfoFi” to Kill AI-Generated Crypto Spam
According to X (formerly Twitter), Nikita Bier, a product lead at the platform, has formally announced a definitive eviction of AI-generated spam and incentive-driven fabrication from X, stating that the deluge of synthetic promotional content will no longer be tolerated. The policy shift targets InfoFi, a DeFi-inspired term for decentralised applications that incentivise users to post, retweet or comment through cryptocurrency rewards.
The move comes as X’s technical team revoked API access for all InfoFi-related applications, effectively stopping their ability to automate mass posting. The mandate makes clear that X will no longer support applications that rely on automated posting scripts and incentive structures. Bier’s announcement emphasises a bid to reduce the digital clutter, noting that AI-generated prose often lacks substance and merely disperses attention.
He complemented the stance with a quip about rival platforms, suggesting BlueSky or Threads could migrate such content if desired, underscoring a broader industry push to expurgate bot-driven spam. 17 January 2026.
