Moving Beyond Awareness: How Threat Hunting Builds Readiness
In an October 2025 piece for The Hacker News, the author argues that Security Awareness Month demonstrates awareness’s value but cannot by itself prevent breaches, which often stem from misconfigurations and exposed credentials. The article contends that traditional tools—EDR, SIEM, and vulnerability scanners—operate mainly on the right side of the Cyber Defense Matrix, emphasising detection and response rather than prevention.
It introduces Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) as a structured, repeatable framework to continuously model threats, validate controls, and secure the business, with actionable steps to get started. Proactive threat hunting, the piece notes, shifts defence leftwards—from merely observing to understanding where exposure originates and closing gaps before an adversary acts.
Three practical stages are highlighted: Get the Right Data, Map the Attack Paths, and Prioritise by Business Impact, each building a clearer, attacker-centric view of risk. This note is signed as written by Jason Frugé, CISO in Residence, XM Cyber.
