Cyberattack on JLR Prompts £1.5 Billion UK Government Intervention
The government has announced a £1.5 billion loan guarantee for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to the cyberattack that disrupted the carmaker’s operations. The loan, backed by the Export Development Guarantee provided by UK Export Finance, will be paid back over five years and is intended to bolster JLR’s cash reserves to support its supply chain. JLR employs roughly 34,000 people directly and 120,000 in its supply chain, underscoring the potential wider impact of the incident on the UK automotive sector.
The cyberattack was discovered in late August and caused severe disruptions to internal systems and the shutdown of production lines; some sections of the digital estate have been restored, and manufacturing operations are expected to resume in the coming days. Some experts warned that the bailout could encourage cybercriminals to target UK companies with weak cybersecurity, with Scattered Spider highlighted in coverage as a group linked to attacks on JLR and other retailers.
