1.5 Billion Packets Per Second DDoS Attack Detected with FastNetMon

FastNetMon today disclosed that it detected a record-scale distributed denial-of-service attack targeting the website of a leading DDoS scrubbing vendor in Western Europe. The assault reached 1.5 billion packets per second (1.5 Gpps), a massive UDP flood launched from compromised customer-premises equipment, including IoT devices and routers, across more than 11,000 unique networks worldwide.

The disclosure follows Cloudflare’s report of mitigating an 11.5 Tbps DDoS attack, highlighting how attackers are pushing both packet and bandwidth volumes higher. According to Pavel Odintsov, founder of FastNetMon, the event is part of a dangerous trend, noting that tens of thousands of hijacked CPE devices can be used in coordinated floods of this magnitude.

FastNetMon’s Advanced platform is designed to handle attacks of this size, with real-time network visibility that enabled automatic detection of the flood within seconds, helping to prevent disruption to the target service.
