Chrome Will Now Auto-Revoke Notification Permissions for Inactive Websites to Reduce Spam

Chrome is tightening its website notification permissions to curb spam by revoking permissions on inactive sites, a move disclosed in an update published on 14 October 2025. Under the change, only active websites will retain the ability to send notifications, with inactive ones having their permissions automatically revoked. In this context, active refers to sites whose notifications users frequently engage with, while inactive sites have very low click-through rates.

According to a Google product manager, the notifications feature remains valuable and useful, but Chrome will automatically revoke a site's permission if it sends a large volume of notifications with very little user engagement. Users can manually re-enable permissions for chosen sites via the Security Check section in Chrome’s settings, ensuring that frequently visited sites can continue to reach them.
